Quick answer: Beeminder is the most persistent. Once a goal falls behind its line, reminders start at a time you choose and come faster as the deadline nears, by email, phone, Slack or text. Streaks and Loop Habit Tracker remind you when a habit is due, and Streaks can fire a system alarm for timed tasks. Routinery pairs scheduled reminders with a voice that calls out each step and an iOS alarm. Habitica turns missed Dailies red and takes HP.
Fall behind in Beeminder and the alerts multiply while money goes on the line, whereas Loop just lowers a score on its chart. Two of the seven apps we checked do not publish what a skip does at all.
We read the help centers, websites and store listings of seven apps and filled in the same two columns for each one: how it calls you back, and what skipping costs you. Where a company does not document a behavior, the table says "Not published," and that means we could not find it written down. If you've noticed that reminders start to feel like background noise after a few weeks, our look at why reminders are the most discussed and least loved habit app feature goes into the reasons.
The evidence on nudges: reminders and stakes both move behavior
A 2025 meta-analysis pooled 14 randomized trials (n=1,565) of medication adherence apps for people with chronic conditions. These weren't habit trackers. Twelve of the 14 apps had an explicit reminder function, and adherence was mostly self-reported, which the authors say can overstate the effect (meta-analysis full text, 2025). Adherence rose by 0.57 points on the MMAS-8 scale (95% CI 0.33-0.80) and by 18.85 percentage points on percentage-based scales (95% CI 2.17-35.53) (Lanke et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2025).
A 2026 trial in Hong Kong put cash at stake. It enrolled 99 adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and participants risked money they'd been given, which is not how Beeminder works. Each got money credited up front, and some was deducted whenever they missed a weekly step target. At six months the incentive group walked 1283 more steps a day than controls, and the group that also got social comparison feedback walked 1545 more (Lai et al., Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2026). Blood sugar didn't move. Neither HbA1c, weight nor cholesterol fell significantly at six or nine months.
In a 2009 study, 96 people tracked a new habit for 12 weeks. Only 82 sent back usable data, and the model fit 39 of them. Even so, the researchers wrote that "missing one opportunity to perform the behaviour did not materially affect the habit formation process" (Lally et al., European Journal of Social Psychology, 2009).
A 2025 qualitative study of 27 adults who had struggled to exercise regularly, 89 percent of them women and 85 percent white, looked only at exercise. It found that when people could not meet the ideal version of their plan, they often skipped exercise altogether instead of scaling it down (BMC Public Health, 2025).

Beeminder: alerts that speed up as the deadline closes in
Beeminder starts reminding you once a goal slips into the red, and on the day you would derail, the alerts keep coming more often until you either log data or the deadline passes. The company calls this zeno polling, after Zeno's paradox (Beeminder Help). You pick when alerts begin. Add Lead Days and you will get one reminder a day for up to 30 days before a goal is due, which suits goals you can't cram into one evening.
A routine reminder lists your safe days. A deadline-day alert spells out how much you still need to do, by what time, and the dollar amount you will lose if you do not. You can route all of this to email, phone notifications, Slack or a webhook, and Bee Plus and Beemium subscribers in the US can get texts.
You draw a Bright Red Line toward a measurable goal, and if your data crosses it you pay the pledge, which climbs a fixed ladder each time (pledge help page). Beeminder's own help page admits the alerts can pile up, and it suggests spacing out deadlines and start times if a stream of countdown messages starts to feel like too much.
Finch: encouragement from friends, reminders undocumented
Finch's public pages describe a self-care pet you look after by finishing small goals, and friends who can send each other "good vibes." Neither the Finch website nor its App Store and Google Play descriptions say how the app reminds you or what happens to your bird on a day you skip. Its help center blocked our reader, so we have left both cells as "Not published."
That makes Finch hard to place on a list about nudges. Its core features, friends included, are free, so it costs nothing to try if you want an app that is gentle with you on a bad day.
Habitica: a skipped Daily changes color and costs HP
Habitica's FAQ says Dailies get bluer as you complete them and redder as you miss them, and the redder a task gets, the more Gold and experience it pays when you finally do it (Habitica FAQ). Missed Dailies also cost HP. Hit zero and you lose a level, that level's stat point, all your Gold and one piece of equipment.
During a quest, you take damage from party members' missed Dailies even with Pause Damage switched on for yourself. Shared Dailies on a Group Plan work differently and do not do damage when missed. Habitica's store listing mentions reminders and widgets but doesn't describe them further.
Habitify: time and place reminders, with the smart ones on Premium
Habitify's Google Play listing promises time and location-based reminders, plus habit stacking that cues up your next habit the moment you finish one (Google Play). The pricing page puts location-based and habit stacking reminders on Premium, along with an "Off mode for breaks." The free plan covers three habits.
We could not find Habitify documenting what a missed day does to your streak or stats.
Loop Habit Tracker: snooze it from the notification
Loop gives each habit its own reminder at the hour you choose, and you can check it off, dismiss it or snooze it right from the notification without opening the app (Google Play).
Missing a day weakens your habit score. Loop's listing says a few missed days after a long streak will not completely destroy your progress, and it frames that as a contrast with don't-break-the-chain apps. It is Android only and free, with no account.
Routinery: reminders, a voice and an alarm, but no documented re-nudge
Routinery is our app. You schedule each routine by weekday and time, and the reminder arrives then. Once you start, a voice reads out each step and calls the next one, so a slow shower doesn't quietly eat your morning (App Store listing). On iOS there is an alarm option that is stronger than a standard notification, and you can also get an alert when you arrive at or leave a place (Routinery update notes).
Rest Mode keeps your streak while you take a planned break, and after a streak breaks, a Streak Recovery Pass restores it. The update notes do not say how many passes you get or how long you have to use one.
None of our public docs say Routinery sends a second nudge after you skip a routine. For alerts that get more insistent as you fall behind, use Beeminder.
Streaks: a reminder when a task is due, an alarm for timed ones
Streaks reminds you automatically when a task needs doing, and its version notes say timed tasks now trigger system alarms (App Store listing). You can also share tasks with other Streaks users so they can encourage you.
Its website says a missed day resets your streak to zero days. Version notes also mention a "2-Day Rule" with an "allowed miss" on negative tasks, and paused tasks, but Streaks' public site does not explain how either works, so we have not counted them in the table. It's Apple-only.
How to choose: match the nudge to how you usually slip
- You forget, then remember too late: Beeminder's alerts speed up on the day you'd derail, and Loop lets you snooze a habit's reminder straight from the notification.
- You need consequences to move: Beeminder charges real money, and Habitica takes HP and can drag your party down with you.
- You drift partway through a routine: Routinery's voice calls out each step as you go.
- Your trigger is a place: Habitify (Premium) and Routinery both offer location alerts.
- You respond to encouragement: Finch's friends feature, or Streaks' task sharing.
- You are on Android and do not want an account: Loop.
Getting started: set one nudge you'll actually answer
Pick a single goal and set the reminder for the time you can act on it, even if that is later than you would like. If the app offers snooze or lead days, use them before adding a second reminder. Beeminder's own help page warns that stacked alerts pile up.
Decide ahead of time what a bad day looks like. A two-minute version of the habit counts. In the BMC study above, people who missed their ideal plan tended to drop it entirely instead of shrinking it. If you are weighing apps that add game mechanics on top of reminders, our ranking of gamified routine builders sorts them by what a miss costs. And if you'd like the app to log some habits for you, our guide to set-and-forget habit automation tools that keep your streak covers that side.
Frequently asked questions: apps that nudge you when you skip goals
What are the best apps that nudge you when you skip goals?
Pick by how you tend to slip. Forgetting is covered by Beeminder, whose alerts come faster as a deadline nears, and by Loop Habit Tracker's snooze button on the notification itself. Stakes come from Beeminder's real-money pledges and Habitica's HP loss for missed Dailies. Losing track halfway through a morning is what Routinery's step-by-step voice is for, and Streaks can fire a system alarm for timed tasks. The comparison table above lists platforms and prices for all seven.
Which habit app sends more reminders when I'm falling behind?
Beeminder is the one that documents it. Its help center says reminders begin at your chosen start time once a goal is in the red, and on the day you would derail they come more and more often until you add data or the deadline passes. You can also set Lead Days so a single reminder arrives each day for up to 30 days ahead. Habitify, Loop, Routinery and Streaks document reminders tied to a time, a place or a due task. Finch does not publish how it reminds you, and Habitica only mentions reminders. We didn't find any of them describing alerts that speed up as you fall behind.
Do any apps take money if I skip a goal?
Beeminder does. You set a pledge on a measurable goal, and if your data crosses the Bright Red Line, you pay it. Pledges normally start at $5 and climb a fixed ladder with each derailment, to $10, $30, $90 and higher, up to a cap you can set. Up to three active goals are free to create. In a 2026 trial, adults who could lose money they had been credited walked 1283 more steps a day at six months, though their blood sugar did not improve significantly.
Will missing one day ruin a habit?
Probably not. A 2009 study that tracked 96 people forming a new habit over 12 weeks found that missing one opportunity "did not materially affect the habit formation process." Streaks resets the streak to zero days, Habitica takes HP, and Loop lowers a habit score without wiping your history. Routinery offers Rest Mode and a Streak Recovery Pass. In the BMC exercise study, the bigger problem was people dropping the plan entirely after missing its ideal version.
Can I pause nudges without losing my streak?
Some apps document a way. Habitica's Pause Damage setting stops HP loss for missed Dailies, though in a quest you'll still take damage from party members. Routinery's Rest Mode keeps your streak during a break. Habitify lists an "Off mode for breaks" on its Premium plan. Beeminder lets you lower or cap your pledge, and its help pages say a lower pledge takes effect after seven days. Streaks' version notes mention paused tasks without explaining how they affect a streak.

About this guide. Written by the Routinery editorial team. Routinery is our product, and it appears in the table in its alphabetical place under the same columns as the other six apps, with its limits stated. Competitor facts come from each company's official help center, website or store listing, checked on 2026-10-01, and prices are US prices on that date. Cells marked "Not published" mean we couldn't find the behavior documented, which isn't the same as the app lacking it.
