Quick answer: For separate pre-shift, post-shift and day-off routines, Routinery and TickTick schedule by weekday, date or custom interval, and Routinery runs each routine step by step on a voice timer. Structured fits nurses who plan the whole day on a timeline, though repeating routines need its Pro plan. Timeshifter Shift Work takes your actual shift dates and tells you when to sleep, seek light and use caffeine. It plans timing, and we couldn't confirm a routine checklist in it.
After twelve hours on the unit, the next few days look nothing like the ones before. A routine app that assumes Tuesday looks like Wednesday will nag you about a morning run at 7 AM on the day you got home at 8. The schedule needs at least three kinds of day: shift days, the first day after a block, and real days off.
We read the public documentation, store listings and pricing pages for four apps and asked how each one lets you give those days different routines. We also looked for anything that takes the shift roster itself. Timeshifter Shift Work does, and it's a sleep-timing app.
12-hour shifts and recovery: what recent studies found
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says nurses in hospitals and nursing care facilities usually work in shifts to provide round-the-clock coverage, including nights, weekends and holidays. The handbook page gives no figures on shift length, so we do not put one here.
A 2026 study of 234 registered nurses on 12-hour shifts at one Saudi hospital found that 82.1 percent reported physical effects of night work and 73.9 percent reported social effects. Night-shift effects went with more fatigue and lower recovery between shifts. It is a single-site convenience sample, and the design cannot show cause.
A 2026 review of 12-hour shifts in intensive care nursing, covering studies published from 2012 to 2025, counts more days off and fewer handovers among the benefits. Accumulated fatigue and sleep disturbances show up too. How bad they get depends, in the author's reading, on experience, family load and institutional support.
Korean researchers tracked 273 nurses on 8-hour rotating shifts, a shorter schedule than the one this guide is about, with wearables for 14 days. Night shifts produced the shortest sleep, a mean of 5.0 hours, and a model predicted fatigue across 34.7 percent of work hours in three consecutive nights. Those are 8-hour shifts and modeled estimates. We cite them because they describe the day after a block of nights.
None of these studies tested an app. If sleep or fatigue is affecting your work or health, that is a conversation for occupational health or your doctor.

Routinery: separate routines for shift days, recovery days and days off
Routinery runs a routine one step at a time, with each step on its own timer and a voice that says what comes next. That matters at 5:30 AM before a day shift, when nobody wants to read a screen. Its App Store listing says routines can be scheduled by weekday and time, and an update note added settings for the dates and intervals you want.
So a pre-shift routine, a post-shift wind-down and a day-off reset can each be their own routine with their own schedule. The listing also says shift work that moves weekly fits into Morning, Afternoon and Evening groups. Version 3.30.5 added a lighter version of any routine for days when you're short on time or energy. You keep only the essentials, which suits the first day after three nights.
The free plan holds two routines at a time, so three day types means rotating one into storage or paying for Premium. We couldn't confirm anything in Routinery's App Store listing, What's new page or website that reads a shift roster. When your schedule changes, you change the routine's days yourself. Sleep and light timing do not appear anywhere in its public docs, and that is the gap Timeshifter fills.
Structured: a timeline for the whole 12-hour day
Structured puts recurring tasks and routines behind its Pro plan, so on the free plan you'd rebuild the post-shift block by hand every week.
The free plan still gives you the timeline. A shift day there shows two small gaps, one before you leave and one after you get home, with twelve hours of work between them. Its Energy Monitor is free too. Switch it on in settings, tag each task as draining or restful, and the day's total load appears in color, according to its help center.
TickTick: custom repeat rules for a roster that won't sit still
TickTick's features page describes flexible recurring rules, weekly, monthly, yearly or custom, and its Google Play listing gives "every 2 weeks from Monday to Thursday" as an example. A rotation that repeats every two weeks fits that kind of rule. Habits live in the same app as your tasks, though the free plan caps you at five.
It's a task manager first. Errands, bills and the post-shift list end up in one place, and you tick through that list yourself.
Timeshifter Shift Work: a sleep plan built from your shift dates
Timeshifter Shift Work is built around your roster as input. Its official page says you enter your night, early, rotating or irregular shifts, including 12-hour rotations, and it tells you when to sleep, seek and avoid light, and use caffeine. It also accounts for your commute and predicts when fatigue risk is highest. The company says it's built on circadian science, and its App Store listing notes the advice hasn't been evaluated by the FDA.
We couldn't confirm a checklist for your own routines or habits in its App Store listing or product page, so use it alongside a routine app. There's no free tier after the 30-day trial.
How to choose: start from the day you find hardest
- Getting out the door before a shift: Routinery. Each step is read aloud.
- The day after a block of nights is the hard one: Timeshifter for when to sleep, plus a short post-shift routine in Routinery or TickTick.
- A two-week rotation: TickTick.
- You want to see the whole 12 hours and what's left after: Structured, ideally with Pro if you want repeats.
- Days off keep turning into catch-up days: a separate day-off routine in any of the first three, scheduled only on those dates.
Getting started: set up routines around a three-shift week
Build one routine per kind of day. Keep each short. A pre-shift routine might be lunch packed, badge and stethoscope in the bag and a water bottle filled, while the post-shift one covers whatever happens between the car and bed and the day-off routine collects everything that never fits on a shift day.
Schedule each routine to your roster. Then test one check-in after a night shift, because some apps count days strictly from midnight. We tested that question for six habit trackers in our guide to habit apps for shift workers and night shifts. If your weeks are messier than a set rotation, our roundup of routine apps for unpredictable days covers apps built around changing plans.
For the wind-down after a day shift, our comparison of evening and night routine apps looks at the apps built for that end of the day.
Frequently asked questions: routines on 12-hour nursing shifts
What are the best routine apps for nurses 12 hour shifts?
Pick by the part of the week that breaks down. Mornings before a shift point to Routinery, which talks you through each step. A messy rotation points to TickTick and its custom repeats. Structured's timeline lays out the full 12 hours, with repeats on Pro. Sleep after nights is a separate problem, and Timeshifter Shift Work is the app built for it. It runs fine next to any of the other three. Prices and platforms for all four are in the comparison table above.
What habit app works for night shift nurses with a flipped schedule?
For timing sleep around a flipped schedule, Timeshifter Shift Work is the one we found that takes your shift dates and plans around them. It is paid after a 30-day trial. For the habits and routines themselves, pick an app you can schedule by date or interval, like Routinery or TickTick. Then check what date a check-in after midnight is filed under. Some trackers count strictly midnight to midnight, which can leave yesterday blank after a night shift.
What's the best app for keeping routines when I work rotating shifts?
Look for scheduling by date or interval. In TickTick, a rule like "every 2 weeks from Monday to Thursday" can follow a fixed rotation for months. In Routinery, you keep a shift-day routine and a day-off routine and give each its own dates. Two routines fit the free plan. We couldn't confirm a roster import in Routinery, so when the hospital posts a new schedule, you update those dates by hand.
Should a post-shift routine be different from a day-off routine?
Yes. The post-shift routine covers the short stretch between leaving the unit and sleeping. A 2026 study of nurses on 12-hour shifts linked night work with lower recovery between shifts, so a short list there is easier to get through on a tired night. The day-off routine can hold the errands, exercise and planning that never fit on shift days. Routinery's lighter routine version helps when you want one routine with a shorter fallback.
Is Routinery free for nurses?
Routinery has a free plan with two routines, each holding up to 10 tasks, and ads. Premium removes the routine cap and comes as a monthly, 6-month or yearly subscription. We have not published a nurse-specific plan. If you want three routines for shift days, the day after a block and days off, the free plan means keeping one in storage and swapping it in. The app needs no account, so you can try a pre-shift routine on your next work day before deciding.
