Quick answer: The evidence does not pick a side. A 2025 systematic review of 65 studies found no main effect of chronotype on cognitive performance in more than 80 percent of them, and the synchrony effect showed up in fewer than half the studies of adults aged 18 to 45. What the evidence does support is consistency. Plan at the same time every day, and choose evening if you want tomorrow decided before tomorrow starts.
Ask which is better and you will get a confident answer either way. Morning people say the mind is clearest at 6am. Evening people say tomorrow should be settled before you sleep.
The research is less sure than either camp.
The evidence: what the chronotype research actually found
A 2025 systematic review in Chronobiology International went through 65 studies on whether chronotype affects cognitive function, on its own or in combination with time of day. It followed PRISMA and searched PubMed and Web of Science.
Two findings matter here.
Chronotype on its own did almost nothing. More than 80 percent of the reviewed studies found no main effect of chronotype on cognitive function. Being a morning or evening person did not, by itself, predict how well people performed.
The synchrony effect is real but inconsistent. Doing a task at your optimal time of day produced better performance in 29 of 64 studies of adults aged 18 to 45, which is 45.31 percent, mostly on attention, inhibition and memory tasks. In older adults it was much stronger, appearing in 10 of 12 studies, especially on tasks involving fluid abilities.
So the popular advice, plan when you are sharpest, has support in fewer than half the studies for working-age adults. The authors also note that task complexity and lighting conditions affect whether the synchrony effect appears at all.
This is a review rather than a trial, and reviews summarise what has been measured, not what causes what. Individual effect sizes are not reported.
A further gap: planning is not the task they measured
There is a further gap between the research and the question. The studies measure attention, inhibition, memory and fluid reasoning. Planning tomorrow is not one of those tasks in a controlled sense. It is mostly recall of what happened, an estimate of what things take, and a few decisions.
That first part has its own problem. A 2025 keystroke-logging study of 33 students across 105 assignments compared measured time on task against what students reported. They overestimated 78 percent of the time, with a median ratio of 1.45, against a median measured duration of 5.1 hours. The authors note this was one course at one university and may not hold elsewhere.
Note the direction. This is people looking backward and reporting long, not the planning fallacy where people look forward and guess short. Either way, planning built on your memory of how today went inherits that error, and it does so whether you plan at 7am or 10pm.
Both sides: stated fairly
Evening planning decides tomorrow before tomorrow starts. The morning then has no decisions in it, which matters most for people who are slow to start. Today is also still fresh, so what carried over is easier to name.
Morning planning uses current information. You know how you slept and what the day actually looks like. Nothing has gone stale overnight.
Both are defensible. Neither is what the evidence is about.
What the evidence does support: doing it at the same time
A 2026 preregistered reanalysis followed 254 adults over 6 months with monthly surveys and found two trajectories, one forming habits and one losing them. Which group someone fell into differed by behavioural complexity, frequency and context stability. Of the ten factors tested, six were significantly associated with habit strength, with perceived difficulty the only negative one.
Context stability is the relevant word. A planning session that happens at 7am on Monday and 11pm on Wednesday has no stable context, and it is the least likely of the three to survive as a habit.
That study reanalysed observational data gathered during the pandemic and used self-reported automaticity, so it shows association rather than cause.
Put next to the chronotype review, the practical reading is narrow. Which hour you pick is weakly supported. Picking one hour and keeping it is better supported.
How to decide: three questions
Do you struggle to start in the morning? Plan the night before. The value is not that the evening brain plans better. It is that the morning then has nothing to decide.
Does your day change shape overnight? Plan in the morning. Shift work, small children and on-call schedules make an evening plan stale before you wake up.
Neither? Pick the one you will actually repeat, and stop optimising. Consistency has better support than either time slot.

Making it hold: four things that matter more than the hour
Fix the trigger, not the intention. "I will plan in the evening" is a wish. "After I put my laptop away, I write tomorrow's three things" has a cue attached to it.
Keep it short enough to repeat on a bad day. Three items, five minutes. A planning session that takes twenty minutes is one you will skip when tired, and skipping is what breaks context stability.
Write from measured time, not remembered time. If you keep underestimating a recurring task, the fix is to time it once rather than to plan harder.

How long should a planning session take?
Short enough that you repeat it on a bad day, which for most people means about five minutes and three items. Length is what decides whether the session survives, and skipping breaks the consistency that the evidence actually supports. A twenty minute session that happens twice a week is worth less than a five minute one that happens daily. If you need longer, that is usually a weekly review rather than a daily plan, and the two are better kept separate.
Does planning at night hurt sleep?
The concern is reasonable and this article does not test it. What we can say is that a short, fixed, written session is different from lying in bed thinking about tomorrow, and the point of writing it down is to stop the second thing. If you find that planning wakes you up, move it earlier in the evening rather than to the morning, so you keep the same-time consistency that the habit evidence points at. Persistent sleep problems are a clinical question rather than a planning one.
